Why Am I Tired but My Body
Won’t Relax?
You can be physically exhausted and still feel wired, restless or unable to settle. Sometimes the issue isn't how tired you are—it’s whether your nervous system has received the signals that the demand has passed.
WHY CAN'T MY BODY SETTLE?
Stress doesn't necessarily disappear when you climb into bed.
After periods of stimulation, worry, physical demand or emotional stress, the body may remain alert even when you're exhausted.
That can make it difficult to settle, fall asleep, stay asleep or feel restored after sleep.
Being exhausted and being able to rest are not the same thing.
WHEN YOUR BODY IS TIRED BUT STILL “ON”
CANT SETTLE
Body feels tired, but your mind or body keeps going.
RACING MIND
Thoughts become louder as soon as everything gets quiet..
WIRED BUT TIRED
Exhausted and overstimulated at the same time.
NIGHT WAKING
You fall asleep but wake feeling suddenly alert.
UNREFRESHED
You slept—but don’t feel restored.
A difficult night doesn't mean something is wrong with your nervous system.
Look at the pattern: how easily can your body move from activity toward recovery?
SHALLOW BREATHING
Breathing remains restricted, high or irregular while trying to rest.

SLEEP ISN'T THE
WHOLE STORY
We often measure rest by hours.
How long did I sleep?
But recovery is also about what happens while the body is moving out of demand.
Can you soften?
Can your breathing become easier?
Can your attention stop scanning?
Can your body recognize that for this moment, it doesn't have to do anything?
Sleep is a state.
Recovery is a process.
Sometimes the practice isn't
trying harder to sleep. It's
learning how to come out of doing.
BEFORE YOU TRY TO FIX YOUR SLEEP. NOTICE.
What happens to my breathing when I lie down?
Does my body soften or am I still bracing somewhere?
Does quiet feel restful, or does my mind suddenly speed up?
What was my nervous system doing during the hours before bed?
Awareness gives you somewhere to begin.
Understanding your pattern is the beginning.
Practice gives your nervous system an opportunity to experience something different.
Rest isn't something you have to earn.
