The Female Nervous System: Why Women May Heal Differently Through Breath


For decades, most stress research focused almost exclusively on men. The prevailing belief was that humans responded to danger through a single biological pathway: fight or flight.


We now know the story is more nuanced.


Research has shown that while both men and women experience fight-or-flight responses, women often exhibit an additional stress pattern known as "tend and befriend." First described by psychologist Dr. Shelley Taylor and colleagues, this model suggests that under stress many women are more likely to protect their children, strengthen relationships, and seek support from trusted people.


This isn't simply a personality trait.


It reflects the remarkable adaptability of the female nervous system.


A Nervous System Designed for Connection


Throughout human history, women often carried the responsibility of protecting

children while preserving the survival of the family and community.


Instead of meeting every threat through aggression or escape, many women naturally responded by:


  • Protecting their children first.

  • Seeking safety through community.

  • Creating connection rather than isolation.

  • Co-regulating through touch, conversation, and presence.

  • Building relationships that increased the likelihood of survival.


Connection became biology.


This helps explain why many women feel better after talking with a trusted friend, attending a yoga class, or simply being in the company of someone who makes them feel safe.


The nervous system is seeking regulation.


Ancient Yogis Recognized Women's Capacity


For much of history, yoga was practiced primarily by men or within limited spiritual lineages. In many regions and eras, women had fewer opportunities to receive formal yogic training, though this varied across traditions and time periods.


By the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, yoga began spreading beyond India. As it reached Europe and North America, women became some of its earliest and most dedicated students and teachers. Their participation played a major role in yoga's worldwide growth.


When Yogi Bhajan introduced Kundalini Yoga to the West in 1969, he welcomed women as practitioners and teachers at a time when many spiritual traditions still had limited female leadership. While his legacy is also the subject of serious allegations and ongoing debate, many practitioners continue to value aspects of the breathing, meditation, mantra, and movement practices while acknowledging that distinction.


One statement often attributed to Yogi Bhajan is:

"What takes a man forty days can take a woman fourteen."

Whether understood literally or symbolically, the teaching points toward an idea shared in some yogic traditions... that women possess an extraordinary capacity for intuition, adaptability, and transformation.


Modern neuroscience offers a complementary perspective: hormones, life stages, and social bonding all influence how women's nervous systems respond to stress and recovery. While science does not confirm a "14 versus 40 day" rule, it does support that men and women can differ in stress physiology.


The Breath: A Direct Conversation With the Nervous System


Every day we take roughly 20,000 breaths.


Most happen automatically.


Yet breathing is one of the few functions we can consciously influence, making it a unique bridge between the body and the brain.


Every intentional inhale…


Every slow exhale…


Every pause…


Sends information throughout the nervous system.


Breath influences heart rate, vagal activity, emotional regulation, blood chemistry, and our perception of safety.


Ancient yogis understood this long before modern neuroscience had the tools to measure it.


Kumbhaka: The Power of the Pause


Thousands of years ago, yogis developed Kumbhaka, intentional breath retention.


To the yogis, this wasn't simply about holding the breath.


It was about holding awareness.


In the stillness between breaths, the mind quiets. The body listens. Attention turns inward.


Today, researchers are exploring how breathing patterns influence carbon dioxide levels, autonomic regulation, and the movement of cerebrospinal fluid. There is growing interest in how respiration interacts with the brain's glymphatic system, the network that helps clear metabolic waste from the brain, particularly during sleep.


The glymphatic system helps remove substances such as:


  • Tau proteins

  • Amyloid-beta proteins

  • Other metabolic byproducts produced by normal brain activity


Scientists are actively studying how different breathing patterns may influence this system. While it is too early to conclude that breath retention alone "flushes" the brain, breathing clearly affects pressure changes within the chest and skull that interact with cerebrospinal fluid movement. This is an exciting area of ongoing research.


The ancient yogis did not speak in the language of neuroscience.


They spoke in the language of prana.


Modern science speaks in terms of cerebrospinal fluid, vagal pathways, and neural physiology.


Different vocabularies.


The same human body.

Historical Context


Yoga evolved over thousands of years through diverse traditions and lineages. During the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, yoga expanded beyond India and gained widespread popularity in Europe and North America, where women became influential students, teachers, and ambassadors of the practice.


Yogi Bhajan introduced his form of Kundalini Yoga to the United States in 1969. His teachings had a significant influence on many practitioners. At the same time, allegations of abuse and misconduct have been documented after his death. Readers are encouraged to distinguish between historical accounts of his role in popularizing Kundalini Yoga in the West and the broader, much older yogic traditions from which many breathing and meditation practices originate.
